How to Handle a Hack

A few years ago I was in L.A. at a nameless comedy club.

It was late and I was dragging — jet lag.

In the greenroom I introduced myself to a comedian and after stating his name he asked: “What are you credits?”

Too tired for restraint, I stared him straight in the face and said: “I don’t talk to people like that.”

Like most hacks, he was rendered speechless when confronted with authenticity. I don’t remember how the conversation ended, I just remember thinking about how I was onto something.

Shortly after I started my podcast Misfits Makin’ It: Oddballs Doing Cool stuff, where I interview misfits… doing cool stuff.

Sure, some of them have fancy credits like, SNL, Netflix, Vanity Fair, and blah blah, but not one time did any of them make me feel like the credit makes the artist. Instead, they’ve taught me that owning my curiosity and my ideas makes me interesting.

Truly, no one of substance cares about your resume. They care about the fullness of you as a person.

And I say that confidently as we’re over 80 interviews deep!

Now that I’m taking a summer producing pause I wanted to take a second to tell you: this is a resource made for you.

It’s been a labor of love. It’s just me and my editor, Ani Monjian, who lives in Aremnia, and has worked diligently through at least one war (!), as well as our network, Radio Misfits Podcast Network.

You and I both need inspiring stories and insight into how to make our own way, which is only getting more complicated as we work through authoritarian creep.
