Producin’ It // Reconcile the Aisle

I have this freak ability to be both a performer and a producer.

Although I feel like it’s mostly because I have no choice. I always knew that I wanted to tell my own stories - jokes, characters, etc - on stage + screen, and I knew that being different meant that I would have to do it myself.

For a long time I took on almost no producing partners, until things got big enough that I was like, okay, now I need help. By that time I knew how to run stuff (do what I say I will do) and what I’d want to expect from people I work with (just do as you saw you will do).

I still have a lot to learn so brought two people onto my podcast Reconcile the Aisle who I think could help me- and by extension you - in learning how to better produce your own work.

Gideon Evans (Daily Show, Comedy Central, President Show) and I talk about how he was banned from Disney World when working with Michael Moore and casting grandmas and pas in his collab with Mo Rocca that got a Daytime Emmy nom, but also go into how he uses intensive research to create story arcs and follows his creative impulses even when it’s not a typical story.

Jenny Gorelick - (Jenny’s Birthday and The Tony Awards) and I speak about Her journey as a producer of comedy and the Tony Awards, producing tips for newbies, and advice to performers from the perspective of a producer.
